The fast-evolving Tribune Co. has named Randy Michaels chief operating officer, responsible for all aspects of the company’s publishing, broadcasting and interactive divisions.

“Randy is one of the most creative human beings I have ever known,” said Sam Zell, Tribune’s chairman and CEO who took control of the company late last year. “But he is exactly what Tribune needs to keep moving forward — smart, decisive, relentless, irreverent, fun and cutting edge.”

Michaels spent his early career as a disc jockey, knocking around at a series of radio stations.
