L.A. Radio Personality El Cucuy Says ‘Adios’

One of Hispanic radio’s biggest personalities, El Cucuy (Renan Almendarez Coello), has signed off of KLAX-FM “La Raza” in Los Angeles, dealing a blow to owner Spanish Broadcasting System. After five years with SBS, El Cucuy announced Monday (Sept. 15) he would focus on building his own radio network (he co-owns a radio station in New Mexico) and continue to work on his TV show, AzAzte pa ca for Azteca America, which debuted earlier this year.

To replace El Cucuy on KLAZ, SBS announced it would import its morning show from WLEY-FM in Chicago, El Chulo de la Manana, hosted by Joaquin Garza “El Chulo,” beginning Tuesday Sept. 16. The show will air weekdays 5 to 10 a.m. on both SBS-owned stations.

“Garza’s show has been a great success in numerous radio markets, and we are confident that Los Angeles will love ‘El Chulo de la Manana’ and connect with the unique style of Garza,” said Marko Radlovic, chief operating officer for SBS.
