This summer, Beck’s company Mercury Radio Arts will start charging a monthly subscription fee for GBTV’s on-demand programming, in a model similar to Netflix or HBO, The New York Times reports. A GBTV subscription will run viewers $4.95 a month for Beck’s 5 p.m. show only, or $9.95 for full access to the network. Beck’s company teamed with MLB Advanced Media (which is responsible for streaming Major League Baseball games online) to power the network, and has a deal with Clear Channel to promote it.
Launching Tuesday, GBTV will offer programs including a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the network. Beck’s new two-hour daily show, titled Glenn Beck, will premiere on Sept. 12 and air at 5 pm, the same time as his current Fox News show—which means that he’ll be in direct competition with his replacement at the network. (It doesn’t violate his exit agreement, though, because it’s online-only.) Beck said that he’s eventually planning to add a number of scripted and unscripted shows to the network as well.
Not everyone in Beck’s camp is comfortable with the subscription model, and even the host himself doesn’t seem entirely convinced that the payment plan will go over well with his fans: “I think we might be a little early,” he told the Times, “but I’d rather be ahead of the pack than part of it.”
On the other hand, Jeff Bercovici notes that if Beck can get 50,000 people to subscribe, he'll be making more from those fees than he did from his contract with Fox.
