Christmas is still a few days away, but Santa Claus, with a little help from Nielsen, is handing out a few early holiday gifts to the networks: ratings wins for 2016.
Sunday Night Football
Because NBC's No. 1 series, Sunday Night Football, stretches well past 11 p.m., the network can't use it to help any of its new shows this fall. Instead, the network is making the most of its No. 2 show, The Voice, which it will deploy to launch all three of its new fall series, NBC announced today.
The first week of the 2015-2016 TV season is in the books. And while there are still several new shows debuting in the next few weeks (Fox premieres its two new comedies, Grandfathered and The Grinder, tonight), we already have a good snapshot of how this season is shaping up, which new shows already seem likely to receive full-season pickups and which seem destined for early exits.
The No. 1 network in adults 18-49 for two seasons in a row will begin defending its title on Sept. 10.
There are still three nights to go in the 2014-15 TV season, but NBC has already declared victory, winning the September-to-May season among adults ages 18 to 49 for a second consecutive year.The network averaged a 2.4 rating for the season in that demographic, just edging out CBS' 2.3 and ABC's 2.2. Fox brought up the rear with a 1.9.
With the 2015 NFL regular season matchups now set, the rights-holding networks have revealed their schedules. The NFL season kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 10 with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the New England Patriots on NBC.
On the verge of winning its first seasonal ratings crown in a decade, NBC still has a lot of work to do if it’s going to repeat its title run in 2014-15.
After spending the better part of the last 10 years at the very bottom of the broadcast ratings hierarchy, NBC is on pace to claim victory for the 2013-14 TV season. As such, the network fully expects to make a killing during the spring/summer upfront bazaar.
While Sunday night’s Season 4 finale of AMC’s The Walking Dead failed to shatter the ratings record set in the season premiere, it did establish a new high-water mark for a cliff-hanger episode.
