Zynga Moves to Make Good On Mobile Gaming Pledge (The Wall Street Journal/Digits)
Zynga, engaged in a high-stakes effort to move its videogame franchise to mobile devices, is fleshing out its strategy. The San Francisco, Calif. game maker announced new mobile versions of three popular games – ”FarmVille,” “Zynga Poker” and “Words With Friends.” VentureBeat These three games were in the making for a while, and they are the first real test of the leadership of Don Mattrick, who left Microsoft’s gaming business seven months ago to become Zynga’s CEO. His task is to rebuild Zynga’s greatness even as he reduces costs through game shutdowns, executive departures, and layoffs. Bloomberg “FarmVille 2: Country Escape” will attempt to recapture many of the 400 million people who have played versions of the farming-simulation game since it became available for computers in 2009. The mobile version will offer free in-game currency to former players and the ability to shift virtual commodities such as water and sugar between the Facebook and mobile versions. TechCrunch It’s a critical time for Zynga, which is trying to revive momentum after losing out on mobile platforms to younger rivals like Finland’s Supercell. When the company went public in 2011, it commanded nine of the 10 top social games on the Facebook platform. San Francisco Chronicle Zynga still commands 112 million players per month, but that’s a far cry from the more than 300 million monthly active users the company enjoyed in 2012, when it spent $180 million to buy “Draw Something,” which was then a mobile hit. The move proved disastrous after “Draw Something” quickly fell from popularity.
