Snapchat-Like App Bolt Leaked on Instagram (SocialTimes)
Some Android users are seeing a banner ad inside Instagram for the company’s new “one tap photo messaging app” Bolt. A few Android users (including one in India) have uploaded the Bolt ads to Twitter, but thus far Instagram has not responded to requests for comment. The Verge Tapping the “free” button yields a dead end in the Google Play Store. Richard Groves, one of the few privy to the new banner ad, tells The Verge that he was using the official Instagram app on his Nexus 5 around 11 p.m. ET Wednesday night when he first saw Bolt, and then it went away 15 minutes later. BetaBeat To be fair, in order to be a real Snapchat ripoff instead of just another photo messaging app, it would have to send dissolvable photos, and all we really know about Bolt is that it’s for “one tap photo messaging.” Either way, this would be Instagram’s second shot at photo messaging — the first being their direct messages feature, which only a handful of users actually care about. The Huffington Post Bolt could be Instagram’s own Snapchat clone, perhaps because adoption of the Snapchat-like feature Instagram Direct — which lets people send private photo messages to other users — is not meeting expectations. But The Verge wondered whether Bolt could wind up looking more like Taptalk, a new photo chat app that’s apparently faster than Snapchat.
