Foursquare Launches Ad Platform for Small Businesses (Forbes)
Monday, location-based mobile service Foursquare launched a new self-service advertising product for independent merchants who want to reach its 40 million users when they happen to be in the neighbhorhood. “This is the first at-scale global platform that lets small businesses all around the world buy on a hyperlocal level to find nearby customers,” said Steven Rosenblatt, Foursquare’s chief revenue officer. Mashable Businesses have a choice between two basic kinds of ads: search and on the Foursquare home screen. Foursquare will provide metrics for the ad, including the number of views, actions, action rate and cost per action. Adweek Big brands like Hertz, Old Navy and Macy’s have been buying ads on the platform for the last year. Perhaps most interestingly, though, advertisers can now employ Foursquare tips left by users about the companies as creative. Bloomberg Businessweek With about 40 million users accustomed to “checking in” when they visit local businesses, including bars and restaurants, Foursquare can target people with smartphone ads when they’re near a client’s location. If those users subsequently check in to those locations, business owners will know, allowing them to calculate return on their advertising dollars. Reuters This latest move comes as the struggling startup looks to bolster its sales and generate some sort of profit for the $112.4 million it has received in capital from investors. And as it was reported earlier this year that Foursquare supposedly only made $2 million in revenue last year, it could use all the help it can get.

In an attempt to clear the air, Snapchat released a blog post Monday that outlines how Snapchat servers handle information — and who can tap that data given the right circumstances. In the post, Snapchat director of operations Micah Schaffer reiterated that all “Snaps” are deleted from servers once they are opened. But unopened Snaps remain on the servers for roughly a month — although Schaffer assured users that no one actually looks at them.
