PlaySpan Launches "Ultimate Payment Wall" for App Developers

Since Spare Change was acquired by PlaySpan three months ago, the companies have been hard at work integrating the two business. Just a few days ago, PlaySpan launched a new virtual goods marketplace inside Facebook, enabling players to purchase in-game items for many different PlaySpan-supported games using Spare Change. Now, PlaySpan is launching a new payments product called the "Ultimate Payment Wall" designed to make it easier for developers to accept more payment methods than ever. The new payments wall has different payment menus for users in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and the EU. Given Facebook's rapid growth abroad - over 70% of Facebook users are now outside the United States - PlaySpan is putting an emphasis on international payments with the new service. For example, nearly 15 payment methods are supported for EU customers, including Ukash, Wallie-card, PayPoint, Maestro, Paysafecard, Carte Bleue, Spare Change, Zong, Paymo/Mobillcash, direct debit, PayPal, and Visa/Mastercard. Currencies are localized as well. PlaySpan's Lex Bayer says the service isn't designed to compete with offers, but rather aims to be the most comprehensive aggregator of payment options. Interestingly, payment brands are being heavily exposed in the interface, and users pay different prices for the same amount of virtual currency based on the payment method selected - allowing users to see which payment methods are the most expensive. "Users will naturally pick methods where they get the most bang for their buck," Bayer says. "If a particular payment option costs more, users may not pick it when they see they can get a better deal elsewhere." PlaySpan is a company that knows the payment space well. It acquired 10-year-old PayByCash last year, and with the Spare Change acquisition this year, the company is combining its payments industry experience with new monetization services for social app and game developers. While Spare Change is still an important consumer brand for the company, the new Ultimate Payment Wall reflects the company's desire to provide broader payment services to developers going forward. The product is now live in the Facebook application Friend Stock.
