New Media Power Couple Hosting 'Web Society' Prom

We’ve often heard people joke that the New York new media scene is like high school, but it’s never had a prom– until now. Gawker video editor Richard Blakeley and URLesque’s Jessica Amason, the couple who recently scored a book deal for their gross food photo Tumblr site ‘This is Why You’re Fat’, are teaming up with EMRG Media and Internet Week to host The Webutante Ball cocktail party on the Empire Hotel rooftop. Billed as a “coming out party” for “web society,” the Webutante Ball will feature an hour of free drinks, a formal dress code, and the crowning of a “Webutante King and Queen.”

This is Blakeley’s first foray back into the world of party hosting since he cancelled his popular Media Meshing bar night last November due to the economic crisis. Now, he says he decided that “just because we’re in a recession doesn’t mean we have to party like we’re in one.” Amason says the duo came up with the Webutante theme because “people seem to be getting tired of the same old bar parties and we saw a great opportunity to class it up a bit.”

The Webutante Ball will be held on Friday, June 5th from 6-10pm at the Empire Hotel. There’s no charge to get in and all who comply with the dress code are welcome. Guests can RSVP on Facebook and submit nominations for King and Queen via e-mail. For more info, check out the Webutante Ball Website.
