John Cruse was promoted Monday (May 17) to vp and general manager of WGNO-TV and WNOL-TV, Tribune Broadcasting's ABC and CW affiliates in New Orleans.

Cruse succeeds Phil Waterman, who exited the position a few weeks ago.

Since 2005, Cruse was the Tribune duopoly's director of sales, seeing the stations through some of the most difficult times, including serving as interim general manager in late summer 2008 when Hurricane Gustav hit Southern Louisiana.

“John’s talent and energy, his experience in this market and his strong ties to the community make him the ideal choice to lead our New Orleans TV stations,” said Jerry Kersting, president of Tribune Broadcasting. “He knows instinctively what will work locally and what won’t, and how we can best serve the interests of our viewers and advertisers because he was born down the bayou in Houma, La., and moved to New Orleans in the eighth grade.”
