Sirius XM Radio added 583,249 net subscribers in second quarter, hitting a record high of 19.5 million subscribers, the subscription radio service announced Wednesday (July 7). The additions were in contrast to last year's quarter, when Sirius' subscriber count declined by 185,999.

In the first half of this year, Sirius XM added 764,690 net subscribers, compared to a loss of 590,421 last year.

With the news, Sirius XM increased its subscriber guidance. Sirius XM now expects net additions of 1.1 million subscribers by the end of the year.

"Our subscriber results mark the best quarter of gross additions, deactivations and net additions since the merger of Sirius and XM in July 2008," said Mel Karmazin, CEO of Sirius XM. "The further improvement in our guidance reflects the attractiveness of satellite radio but maintains a cautious outlook for continued improvement in the economy."
