Discovery Communications is reshuffling its executive ranks. The company announced late Monday afternoon that it would install Andy Warren—currently chief financial officer at Liz Claiborne—as its new CFO starting in mid-March.
Warren will replace Brad Singer, who gave notice this past summer that he will leave Discovery around that same time.
Before jumping to Liz Claiborne in 2007, Warren worked in cable operations at NBCUniversal, under an executive structure that was similar to the one he will be inhabiting in his new job. From 2002-04, Warren was NBCUniversal's CFO of cable operations, working under David Zaslav who was, at the time, chief of cable operations there. Zaslav is now president and CEO of Discovery Communications.
"Having worked extensively with Andy at NBCUniversal, I know firsthand what an effective and strategic leader he is, how knowledgeable and passionate he is about the media business, and what a great addition he will be to our already strong senior management team,” Zaslav said in a statement.
As part of the reorganization, Discovery will get a new marketing chief. David Leavy, who had been svp of corporate marketing and affairs, will now report directly to Zaslav as chief communications officer—a position created specifically for him in which he will coordinate, among other things, Discovery's central marketing and media planning initiatives.
Discovery says it is also eliminating the position of COO and redistributing those responsibilities among numerous top executives (including Warren)—a move that was not unexpected. When Discovery's former COO Peter Ligouri announced he was stepping down after two years in the position this past November, Zaslav said he didn't plan to find a replacement.
