Facebook Calls for Philippines Typhoon Donations at Top of News Feed

Teams with Red Cross and asks for $10

Facebook is asking for $10 donations to the American Red Cross at the top of every user's News Feed to help those in need for assistance after the destructive Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The catastrophe has left nearly 600,000 people displaced, per several reports, and at least 2,275 dead, according to The Wall Street Journal.

This pro bono measure marks the first time Facebook has given the top-of-the-feed "notifications" real estate to such a relief effort. Clicking the blue "Donate $10.00" button takes users to a payment page where they can contribute in a couple steps. 

A post on the Red Cross blog today said: "For the next few days, Facebook is making it possible for users to donate directly to the American Red Cross either through a notification in News Feed, or directly on our Facebook page. We're excited and grateful that they are activating this feature to support the massive global response effort following the impact of Typhoon Haiyan on the Philippines this past week."
