Grindr, the popular location-based gay dating app, has launched a new version for straight people, called Blendr.
Grindr's founder and chief executive, Joel Simkhai, told the Guardian that he created the new app after “being inundated with requests from straight women.” He stresses, however, that Blendr is less focused on sex than its gay counterpart.
"It's not the same as Grindr,” Simkhai said. “It is similar to Grindr in that it's a community based on interests. But while that was based on one interest—being gay—this is based on lots of interests. It could end up in a date, but the main goal is meeting new people."
The free app, previously known as Project Amicus, is available on iPhone and iPad, displaying photos and basic details of people nearby, based on your GPS location.
Blendr is not the first dating app on the market, as Adweek writer Hephzibah Anderson reported in May. Foursquare offshoot Singlesquare, Facebook application Social Connect, and apps such as meetMoi NOW, SinglesAroundMe, and Skout are all now available for location-based meet-ups and dating.
