A bruising for Apple? News Corp. has delayed the launch of its much-hyped digital daily newspaper for the iPad to make sure a planned subscription service is working right.
News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch was set to unveil The Daily Jan. 19 in a joint appearance with Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
The Daily would be the first to use Apple’s iTunes subscription model, and the holdup apparently is on Apple’s end: more time is needed to make sure the sub model and app work together correctly. The delay is expected to be a matter of weeks, not months, though.
News Corp. is reportedly spending $30 million and hiring some 100 staffers, many of them big-name journalists, to launch the publication. Still, skeptics have questioned how it will accumulate a big enough audience to pay for News Corp.’s investment, given the iPad’s relatively small ownership base; one forecast called for the device to ship 13 million units in 2010.
