Dave Zinczenko, Bonnier Link Up

Men's Health vet to help enthusiast publisher with branded books

Dave Zinczenko has landed his second book-publishing consulting gig, with enthusiast publisher Bonnier Corp.

Since he left Rodale a year ago, the men’s lifestyle guru has been peddling his book publishing services to magazine publishers hungry for new revenue streams. Through his new company, Galvanized LLC, Zinczenko signed on to work with fitness and celebrity publisher American Media Inc. (separately, he also secured a joint venture with Random House). Under the new, five-year management consulting agreement with Bonnier, he’ll help expand the company’s recently-formed book division, Bonnier Brands.

“He’s a proven operator, from his experience with Rodale to what he’s done since he’s started at Galvanized,” said Dave Freygang, president and CEO of Bonnier. “He’s got a great touch with understanding what the consumer wants.” Freygang said the company saw particular opportunity to expand its brands like Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and Saveur.

Zinczenko was equally effusive. “They have a hungry, deeply engaged reader base, and it’s exactly the types of audiences that are willing to invest in a fuller relationship with their brands.”

Talks started about a year ago when Zinczenko’s brother Eric Zinczenko, an evp at Bonnier, introduced Dave to Freygang.

“Eric made the intro,” Dave Zinczenko said. “Since then, we’ve stayed in touch and met fairly regularly.”

Zinczenko has also talked to Condé Nast and Hearst about his book publishing services, but those discussions are on hold for now. That removes any conflict of interest with AMI, whose Shape and Men’s Fitness compete with titles at the other companies. Not so Bonnier and AMI.
