Bad news for the frivolity sector: A poll by InsightExpress finds Americans inclined to give “sensible” gifts this holiday season. Apart from toys for kids (which 46 percent plan to buy), gift-givers’ top categories will be clothing for adults (53 percent) and books (46 percent). Other leading sectors include music-related items (43 percent), consumer electronics (40 percent), clothes for kids (36 percent), home-decor items (32 percent) and food (31 percent). As recession-wary shoppers keep their holiday spending in check, who’s likely to get less loot? Among those planning to spend less, 68 percent said they’ll reduce their outlays for extended family.
