Online holiday sales are expected to ring up $21.6 billion this season, a 19 percent rise from the year-earlier period, according to new data from JupiterResearch. And the boost is coming primarily from new shoppers to the Web, while the company forecasts actual spending per customer to be flat, showing a 2 percent increase to $251 per online shopper.

The Jupitermedia unit said 86 million U.S. residents will click their way through holiday shopping lists this year, up 18 percent from the 73 million who did so in 2003.
