For teenagers who lack adult supervision when they get home each afternoon, the phrase “afterschool activities” is likely to encompass alcohol, tobacco, sex and other forbidden pastimes. And a study conducted for the YMCA finds there’s no shortage of unsupervised teens. Fifty-nine percent are left unsupervised at least one afternoon per week, and 39 percent are on their own three or more afternoons in a typical week.
