NEW YORK The International Advertising Festival named its first radio jury chair today: Malcolm Poynton, executive creative director of Ogilvy & Mather in London.
The New Zealand native, 38, has been ecd at O&M since June 2003. Before that, Poynton was at Saatchi & Saatchi in Sydney, Australia, where he began in 2000. His advertising career began in 1987. In 1989, he joined then-new Australian agency O MON and moved on to the The Campaign Palace in 1993. Next, he joined M&C Saatchi in London, where he worked on British Airways, among other accounts. A BA "Johnny Foreigner" spot he worked on earned a Gold Lion in 2000.
Poynton joins the previously named jury chairs: Mark Stewart, executive vice president and chief strategy officer at Universal McCann in New York, who will lead the Media Lions judging; Fred Koblinger, chief executive officer of BBDO Holding Austria in Vienna, who will serve as Lions Direct jury president; P.J. Pereira, vice president and creative director of AgenciaClick in Sao Paulo, Brazil, who will head the Cyber Lions panel; and John Hunt, worldwide creative director of TBWA, who will lead the film, press and outdoor jurists.
The International Advertising Festival announced the new radio category in April.
New categories have been introduced to the festival periodically. Cyber Lions were added in 1998 for interactive advertising. In 1999, the Media Lions category debuted, honoring creative use of media, and in 2002, a Lions Direct competition was initiated for direct marketing efforts.
The 52nd International Advertising Festival will take place June 19-25, 2005, in Cannes, France.
