NEW YORK In the latest effort by a publisher to grow its teen athlete fan base, ESPN has struck an agreement to acquire high-school sports media company SchoolSports.

SchoolSports publishes the magazines Rise and Girl, whose content will be used across ESPN's platforms, the company said. SchoolSports also publishes online at Risemag.com and has a high school basketball events business.

SchoolSports CEO Jim Kaufman will continue to run the company. He will report to James Brown, svp, new program development of ESPN; and Gary Hoenig, editor in chief of ESPN the Magazine and general manager, ESPN Publishing.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In recent months, Sports Illustrated reached an alliance with Takkle.com, an online social network for teen jocks; while Rodale's Runner's World partnered with MileSplit, a network of Web sites that cover high school running.
