Advantica (formerly Flagstar Cos.) has narrowed its contender list to semifinalists in separate reviews for two of its restaurant chain accounts.
Six Southern California semifinalists are left in Coco's restaurants' estimated $10 million general market review. They are: Colby Effler & Partners, Duncan & Associates and The Leap Partnership, all Santa Monica; Dailey & Associates, West Hollywood; Heil-Brice Retail Advertising, Newport Beach; and TKO Advertising, Studio City, according to Catherine Bension, senior partner at Select Resources International, the Los Angeles consultancy conducting the review.
Chemistry checks will be held this week, Bension said, to determine the finalists. A decision is expected by the end of February.
Separately, five California shops are semifinalists for the Hispanic advertising account for both Carrows' and Coco's restaurants. They are: al Punto Advertising, Santa Ana; HeadQuarters Advertising, San Francisco; Houston Helm Bermudez and Valdez Zacky Associates, both Los Angeles; and One World Communications, Santa Monica, a division of The Leap Partnership.
Chemistry checks for the Hispanic account will take place in mid-February, Bension said, to avoid a conflict with the general market review. A decision is expected by the end of March.
All Advantica accounts either left the shop or were put into review after Foote, Cone & Belding won conflicting Taco Bell business last November. Carrows' $7 million account was awarded late last year to Kovel Kresser & Partners in Venice, Calif. El Pollo Loco awarded its $10 million account to Dailey last week (see related story, page 2).
