No wonder it’s hard to maneuver a shopping cart through the supermarket: People clog the aisles as they stand around reading food labels.

In a poll conducted in April but released last month by the Nielsen Co. (Adweek’s parent company), 51 percent of respondents said they always check food labeling for the presence or amount of fat in the product. Nearly as many (48 percent) said they check the data on calories. Other nutritional information that gets attention from many shoppers: sugar (44 percent), trans fat (43 percent), salt/sodium (37 percent), carbohydrates (35 percent), fiber (31 percent) and protein (31 percent).
