When consumers claim to be tightening their belts in response to a tough economy, one wonders if some are trying to sound more fiscally virtuous than they truly are. Thus, we’ll take it seriously when respondents to a BIGresearch poll for the National Retail Federation report plans to spend a shade less on Mother’s Day than they did last year.

When asked how much they’ll spend for the holiday this year, consumers gave responses that averaged out to $138.63
