NEW YORK Interpublic Group's Initiative has hired a new West Coast vp and director of its Innovations unit, Ezra Cooperstein, the agency said today.

The new hire replaces Jonathan Haber, who left last year to become director of a similar unit at Omnicom Group's OMD called Ignition Factory. The units at both shops focus on new and innovative uses of media to further client marketing goals.

Cooperstein, 28, joins Initiative from Current TV, the cable news, information and entertainment channel, where he rose from assistant to vp, development and programming. Most recently, Cooperstein served as the executive in charge of all Current series, oversaw all show development and set the network's scheduling strategy.

"Ezra has an amazing track record, particularly for someone so young," said Tim Spengler, president, Initiative U.S. "I am confident he will make great contributions to our clients' marketing strategies with his innovative way of thinking."

Cooperstein, based in Los Angeles, reports to Jason Meil, evp, managing director, Innovations, who also worked at Current before joining Initiative in October 2008. (Dave Rosner is Cooperstein's East Coast Innovations counterpart.)

"Ezra's career has been built upon staying ahead of the curve," Meil said. "He knows what appeals to consumers and he's conversant on all emerging platforms. He'll be a great addition to our Innovations team."
