HuffPo Plays Ball With Web Sports

The Huffington Post is continuing its content expansion spree by diving into one of the most ubiquitous and competitive topics on the Web: sports.

The upstart news and community site -- and self-described Internet newspaper -- has rolled out HuffPost Sports, which will feature its signature mix of breaking news, aggregated stories, video and guest celebrity bloggers. Sports agent Arn Tellem and the New York Daily News columnist Mike Lupica are among the section's early contributors.

Sports, like HuffPost's core focus of politics, lends itself to heavy community involvement and debate. And according to Huffington Post co-founder and editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington, the site's users have long been asking her staff to tackle sports. "Of course, sports loom large in the country's consciousness, from game coverage and the big business of sports to its larger-than-life personalities and fantasy games, so it's a natural next step for HuffPost to create a sports section," she said.

However, the sports category is also super-saturated on the Web. HuffPost Sports faces a competitive segment that includes giants like Yahoo Sports and ESPN, local newspaper sites, and a growing number of fan community sites and blogs.

HuffPost Sports is the latest in a growing number of new content sections launched by Huffington Post over the past year or so. For example, the site has recently introduced local sections aimed at New York and Denver, as well as a section focused solely on books.
