Charlie O'Donnell, creator of Path 101, has an interesting post today about the way to view job hunting. With very few job openings on job boards, no recruiters on the hunt and no on campus job fairs, the current economy is turning upcoming grads and the recently unemployed in entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs are defined as people who have a product&#151in this case the product is you&#151that they have to shape, target and pitch in order to survive. Oh, you scoff, no problem! Who can sell you better than you? Well it's not as easy as you think. This is something few have ever been taught how to do&#151how to get someone to fight for you in the budget because they really need you. Anyone can get a job when there's an opening, but can you get a company to create a position for you after they just cut 15 percent of their staff? In his opinion, O'Donnell says there are two types of people, those who sit by the phone and wait for interviews and those who get out there and start doing the interviewing themselves. Getting in for an informational interview helps you understand what companies are seeking right now while also helping you make the connections you need to continue selling yourself. "How are you going to help us make more money than we're spending on you?" is an interview question too few of us are prepping for. It's not just a matter of having the right answer, but also having the skills to back it up. At Path 101 O'Donnell is help entrepreneurs make connections and ask questions of industry professionals. In his opinion, "There's really no substitute for the accrued wisdom of someone who has been there."
