Consumer reporter Asa Aarons, most familiar to viewers for his 15-years at WNBC, has joined WCBS/Channel 2.
A station spokesman confirms to FishbowlNY that Aarons starts at Channel 2 on Thursday. His first reports are likely to be seen next week.
Aarons knows where his focus will lie.
“All the scams that used to be done via mail or even on the street have now moved to the Internet,” Aarons tells FishbowlNY. “I’ll be showing consumers how to make the technology work for [them], rather than against them.”
Aarons will bring his popular “Ask Asa” segment to Channel 2, much like Arnold Diaz dusted off his “Shame on You” reports at WNYW/Channel 5.
“Ask Asa is well-established and quite honestly I just love the brand. Till this day people will often address me as Ask Asa rather than Asa Aarons. It’s nice, and it shows how well its worked.”
Since 2009, Aarons has been with NY1, first as an employment reporter, then focusing on the usual consumer beat.
“NY1 was a fantastic experience for me. You shoot, edit and best of all surround yourself with young people who have no sense of limitation,” Aarons says. “While many of them looked to me to share experience, I often learned a whole new approach to story coverage from NY1 reporters.”
His contract with NY1 was about to end, according to the Daily News, and Aarons was pushing for another network affiliation gig. Amid the countless cost-cutting of talent, he left WNBC in 2007. That same year, Aarons went home with his only New York Emmy Award to date.
