Unemployment Claims Rise

Last week unemployment claims by first-time filers rose 13,000 to 462,000, the labor department reported earlier today.

For the week ended Oct. 2, 4.4 million Americans were collecting unemployment checks. That’s not including those who have exhausted their regular benefits and are receiving checks under the Emergency Unemployment Compensation legislation. That data for the week ending Oct. 2 will be released next Thursday.

Two weeks ago—the week ended Sept. 25, nearly 10 million out of work Americans were collecting some form of unemployment.
