TV Guide has announced that Debra Birnbaum has been named president/editor-in-chief of the publication. In her new role, Birnbaum, who remains editor-in-chief, will pursue new partnership and brand opportunities for this longstanding entertainment publication.
Birnbaum will continue to work closely with TV Guide Magazine‘s publisher, Lori O’Connor. Her new duties are effective immediately.
“For our millions of readers, TV Guide Magazine is much more than a magazine, it’s the story of American television,” Birnbaum said. “This new role is the next chapter. It’s an opportunity to guide passionate fans to ‘what’s worth watching,’ as the way we consume content continues to evolve.”
During her four and half year tenure as editor-in-chief, Birnbaum has introduced popular franchises like “Fan Favorites” and “The Hot List” as well as overseen a cover-to-cover redesign of the magazine. Despite industry-wide decreases in magazine circulation and readership, TV Guide Magazine has maintained a circulation of 2 million and a weekly readership of nearly 13 million people.
Birnbaum has also been instrumental in the effort to launch digital editions of the magazine on Amazon’s Kindle Fire, Barnes and Noble’s Nook, and later this month in will be available on Apple’s iPad.
“Debra has successfully steered TV Guide Magazine through some of the most challenging years for publishing, maintaining themagazine’s readership, and reshaping the brand despite significant odds,”Jack Kliger, TV Guide Magazine senior advisor, said. “This appointment is a natural step as we continue togrow and develop one of the strongest brands in entertainment media.”
