A Journalist Who Once Thwarted New York Governor Hugh Carey

Robert Wacker, who passed away this week, scored one of his biggest scoops while at Newsday.

Robert Wacker, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 92, was a “newspaper man” through and through.

As an obituary in the Riverhead News-Review notes, he met his wife of 50 years while working at the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. Back in the 1970s, he was also the editor of said Riverhead weekly newspaper.

A high point of Wacker’s journalism career – he also did PR – involved the man Ed Koch once called “the greatest governor in modern history.”
