The two things that jumped off the page when reading Alex Vadukul’s bio are the fact that he was born in Milan and idolizes Gay Talese. Solid lineage, on both fronts.
The New York-based Vadukul, who has in recent years been a regular contributor to the New York Times, and also written for the paper’s style magazine T and Rolling Stone, this week added the title of U.S. editor for London-based arts and culture quarterly Port. The publication was co-founded in 2011 by Matt Willey, who serves as senior editor and boasts an equally intriguing background:
Willey is on the board of the Editorial Design Organization and is the vice chairman of The Typographic Circle. He is a visiting lecturer at Skolen For Visuel Kommunikation in Denmark.
Matt has won various honors for his work including two Premier Awards from the International Society of Typographic Designers, Silver Awards from the Society of Publications Designers and The Art Directors Club, a Platinum Award from Graphis as well as recognition from D&AD, The Design Week Awards, The Type Directors Club and AIGA.
Given these credentials, it’s no surprise that Port appears to have evolved into an increasingly handsome magazine. “My position started with the current issue,” Vadukul tells FishbowlNY. “I have two stories. They’re not online yet, but should be up pretty shortly.”
“One piece is a profile about famed Italian butcher Dario Cecchini, with a particular focus on the craft of butchery. What makes a good butcher? What makes a great one? The other piece is about the growing trend of retro video gaming.”
“The position is primarily a writing position, but also as part of the job I am representing the magazine here in the States.The second issue of Port featured David Remnick on the cover. For me, that was the issue that got my attention, and that’s when I became a fan.”
Vadukul will continue to freelance elsewhere. Among those welcoming him, cheekily, was London-based Port section editor Jolyon Webber.
