Newsday far From Agreement With Union

Long Island paper Newsday has exchanged contract proposals with the Graphic Communications Council of The Teamsters, but the two sides are still far short of consensus, says MediaMatters’ Joe Strupp.

In January, the union, which has 1,100 members, declined a contract renegotiation that would have resulted in pay cuts of 10%. This negotiation comes as Newsday faces huge operating losses and a highly contentious dynamic between management and editorial.

Michael Amon said, in a statement published today by Strupp, “It appears the two sides remain far apart on issues such as wages, vacation and outsourcing of delivery.”
