Nearly 50 Layoffs At The Miami Herald

Miami Herald TV writer Glenn Garvin tweets that the Miami Herald has just laid off 49 people, including nine from the newsroom. The company is adding another compulsory weeklong furlough as well.

The Herald’s owner, McClatchy, reported an 83 percent drop in profit in its most recent earnings report. The Miami Herald’s last round of layoffs was in March 2009, when it trimmed staff by 19 percent, or 175 positions.

That means that after today’s cuts, the paper’s staff will be down to about 700.

Update: Poynter has the memo.
