More On Merc Vacation Changes

We reported last week that employees at the Bay Area News Group (the San Jose Mercury News and more West Coast papers) are not going to accrue any vacation for the next few months. Turns out that stinging money-saving move applies only to non-unionized employees–for now.

The San Jose Newspaper Guild said that the company is asking for the same suspension for guild-covered employees. It’s “needed in order to cut expenses on their books, and results from unexpectedly poor revenue flows in November, despite the best efforts of our advertising staff,” and is intended to prevent furloughs or layoffs.
