Jobless Claims Might Have Fallen Last Week. We Think.

According to the Department of Labor, 397,000 people last week applied for unemployment insurance.

This is a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 406,000.

But last week, the Department of Labor had a completely different number—402k down from 404k. This happens a lot: as the agency gets better data, it revises preliminary figures into something more accurate.

So to refresh: Last week, we thought claims dropped by two thousand, from 404,000 to 402,000, but according to the revised figure, they actually rose by two thousand (from 404,000 to 406,000).
