GM Raises Cash by Putting Historic Cars up for Auction

It's a house! It's a car! Stop, you're both right! The 1925 Chevrolet House Car (pictured), a proto-camper with maple floors, is just one of the 225 historic and unique vehicles that General Motors has put up for auction this week to raise cash. The 38th annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction runs through Sunday in Scottsdale, Arizona (coincident, we might add, with the North American International Auto Show in Detroit), and the GM offering includes a 1904 Oldsmobile Touring Runabout, a swell 1955 Buick Century, and a bright orange 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge in which, with the addition of a confederate flag and welded-shut doors, those Duke boys would feel right at home (it was actually used in the 2004 made-for-TV film The Last Ride, which doesn't sound like it ended well). The sales are expected to generate less than $5 million for GM. Looking for something more contemporary than, say, a white convertible 1968 Pontiac Catalina? GM and other American automakers are auctioning the rights to first production performance vehicles and special editions at the Scottsdale event, with proceeds benefitting charities. From GM comes rights to the first retail production 2010 Chevrolet Camaro coupe. The sale will benefit the American Heart Association, and the winning bidder will receive VIN No. 100001 and can spec the Camaro to their liking, choosing from several colors, engines, transmissions, and trim packages. And for the pathologically adventurous, the auction includes a 1984 Aston Martin Lagonda owned by the late Evel Knievel. "E KNIEVEL" vanity plate not included.
