Frontline To Roll Out 'On-Demand' Web Player For Local Affiliates

A year in the works, PBS’ Frontline is expected to announce later today that it will offer full-length “on-demand” documentaries on the Web through its local affiliates’ Web sites.

“We are all witnessing an accelerating shift in the television landscape,” says executive producer David Fanning.

PBS expects the “Station Player” — which cost less than $20,000 to develop — to be on 30 affiliate Web sites by the end of the month.

But will Frontline viewers will want to watch full-length documentaries online — much less find their affiliates’ Web sites to watch them?

“We already have had millions of views of our full length programs viewed online at Frontline‘s site — there are 57 available for viewing there — so we’re confident that we already have a strong audience,” says Frontline editorial director Marrie Campbell.
