Fox 5 Poaches from D.C., Boston

New York local news is getting some new talent. Rena Popp, previously assistant news director at Washington D.C.'s WTTG, will take over the same position at Fox 5. Before D.C., Popp served in Bakersfield, Los Angles, and Baltimore. Additionally, David Hatcher returns to Fox 5 as executive producer, a position he held at the station from 2002-2006. He left to be assistant news director of Boston's WBZ and WSBK. The full release is after the jump. FOX 5 NAMES RENA POPP ASSISTANT NEWS DIRECTOR David Hatcher Returns to Fox 5 as Executive Producer NEW YORK Rena Popp has been named Assistant News Director of WNYW Fox 5, announced Lew Leone, Vice President and General Manager, WNYW-TV and WWOR- TV. Popp assumes her new post on September 8, 2008. In addition, David Hatcher has been named Executive Producer of "Fox 5 News at 10 p.m." effective September 2, 2008. In making the announcement, Leone stated, "Rena is has demonstrated great leadership in her role as Assistant News Director at WTTG and her experience managing an active newsroom covering a diverse region will be an asset as we welcome her to WNYW. We are also happy to have David back at Fox 5 as he is an accomplished producer and a true team leader." Popp joins WNYW from Fox owned-and-operated WTTG in Washington, D.C., where she served as Assistant News Director since 2005 and helped managed a news team covering Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. While there she was also part of the team that launched the station's newscasts at 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Previously, Popp was News Director at KBAK in Bakersfield, California. Prior to this she was Senior Executive Producer at KCBS in Los Angeles. Before joining KCBS, Popp served as Assistant News Director at WBAL in Baltimore. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism from Pennsylvania State University. Hatcher returns to Fox 5 where from 2002-2006 he served as Executive Producer of "Fox 5 News at 5:00 p.m." and "Fox 5 News at 6:00 p.m." Most recently, he was the Assistant News Director at WBZ and WSBK in Boston. Previously, Hatcher was Executive Producer at WCBS in New York and WSVN in Miami and served as a senior producer for NBC's "Real Life" and a producer for WABC in New York. Hatcher began his broadcast career with WHDH in Boston after graduating from Boston University's College of Communication with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism.
