As part of its expanding entertainment coverage, NYMag.com has hired its first West Coast editor.
The New York magazine site announced yesterday that Claude Brodesser-Akner, a media and entertainment reporting veteran, would be joining the team of its Vulture blog. Brodesser-Akner has been covering the industry since 1996, working for Mediaweek and Variety, editing our sister site FishbowlLA and creating the weekly public radio show “The Business.” He also helped launch TMZ.com and served as the Los Angeles bureau chief for Advertising Age. He was most recently a contributor for Wired.
This latest hire is part of NYMag.com’s plans to expand its entertainment and culture coverage, led by former Entertainment Weekly editor Josh Wolk, who joined the site in November.

CLAUDE BRODESSER-AKNER NAMED WEST COAST EDITOR AT NYMAG.COM’S VULTURE
New York, NY, January 11, 2010 — Nymag.com Editorial Director Ben Williams announced today that Claude Brodesser-Akner has joined the Vulture entertainment and culture team as West Coast Editor. Using his many years of experience reporting on the movie industry for Variety, Wired, Ad Age, and TMZ, Brodesser-Akner will be breaking movie news for Vulture, uncovering deals and casting news, and exploring seismic shifts in the industry. He will decode what happened in the last twelve hours, and give readers a look ahead at the next twelve to come. He is the site’s first editorial hire on the West Coast and joins recently hired Entertainment Editor Josh Wolk in expanding the site’s entertainment coverage.

Brodesser-Akner has covered the media and entertainment business since 1996: Writing about TV stations for Mediaweek magazine; as a Broadway theater reporter for Variety’s Gotham Edition in New York; a film correspondent for Daily Variety and Variety in Los Angeles. In 2004, he created the weekly public radio show, “The Business,” heard on KCRW in Southern California as well as other NPR affiliates, and served as the program’s host until March 2009, along the way winning several Los Angeles Press Club awards.
During the five years he hosted “The Business,” Brodesser-Akner was based in Los Angeles and served as co-editor of mediabistro.com’s FishbowlLA blog; helped launch TMZ.com as its entertainment industry blogger, and worked as the L.A. bureau chief of Advertising Age and the co-editor of the paper’s “Madison+Vine” entertainment marketing section and newsletter (2007-09). While at Ad Age, Brodesser-Akner launched a successful partnership with The William Morris Agency to present the latest entertainment marketing intelligence with The 2008 Madison+Vine Conference. Most recently, he’d been a contributing writer at Wired magazine.
