Economy Adds Far Fewer Jobs Than Expected But Unemployment Rate Falls

The unemployment rate fell to 9.0 percent as the economy added just 36,000 jobs in January, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said today.

This is in direct contrast to estimates that the unemployment rate would rise while the economy added over 100,000 jobs. (The unemployment rate can rise even when jobs are added when discouraged jobseekers, who haven’t been counted as “unemployed” because they haven’t been looking for work, jump back into the labor market because they believe the situation is improving.)
