In a guest piece in today’s LAT Calendar, NBC anchor Brian Williams suggests that Joseph Welch’s famous query to Joe McCarthy (“Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?”) wouldn’t have the same impact today as it did in 1954, because there is Too Much Information out there:
If each generation has its own Joseph Welch moment, there’s a real danger that we might miss ours, because our attention is elsewhere. While we yearn for clarity and authenticity, we are awash in choices and distractions.
