Box Office round up, the late edition

So, apparently, “King Kong” is “setting it’s own pattern,” according to Universal vice chairman, Marc Shmuger in Variety. Translated into English, this means, “behaving erratically.” And no one likes an 800 lb. gorilla to behave erratically.

I’ve spent a fair part of today pondering the “Kong” numbers, and most confounding is how it’s all over the map, demographically: Initially, women were staying away, as the Clearsi-and-testosterone crowd rushed in mid-weekto the exclusion of anyone else. Then, over the weekend, the audience on Saturday turned much more female (47%), and mostly over 25 (55%).

The conclusion? We’ve been SO conditioned in Hollywood to judge a picture by it’s opening weekend, excellent films suffer in the process? Maybe everyone should back off a little and let a movie find its way?

Nah!

What we saw this past weekend was masterful chess on the part of Twentieth Century Fox: Their female-skewing comedy “The Family Stone” managed “only”...
