Bonnier Promotes Zinczenko and Hano to VP

Consumer-magazine behemoth Bonnier today announced that it has promoted both Gregg Hano and Eric Zinczenko to the position of vice president and group publisher. Hano, who had been group publisher of Bonnier's technology titles, will be in charge of Popular Science, Science Illustrated, Sound + Vision, Popular Photography and American Photography. He's behind the launch of the Popular Science iPad app. The company said it plans to launch iPad apps for Popular Photography and Sound + Vision "later this month" (presumably that means July, since we're running out of days in June). Zinczenko, meanwhile, has led Bonnier's outdoor brands, including Field & Stream, since January 2006. Press release after the jump. New York, N.Y. -- Bonnier Corporation today announced the promotions of Gregg Hano and Eric Zinczenko, both to the position of Vice President, Group Publisher. Hano will oversee Popular Science, Science Illustrated, Sound + Vision, Popular Photography and American Photography; Zinczenko will oversee Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and Shot Business. The announcement was made by Terry Snow, CEO of Bonnier Corp. "Gregg and Eric have both shown the ability to produce profit despite difficult economic times," says Snow. "They are innovative thinkers who have consistently developed big new ideas to help their advertising partners successfully reach key audiences. They know their brands and the audiences they serve and will continue to be highly valued for their unparalleled marketing and sales ability." Hano has served as Group Publisher of Bonnierâ€™s technology titles for more than seven years. With Hano at the helm, the 138-year-old Popular Science has marked a series of financial milestones, including the most profitable year and largest issue ever, and Web revenue reaching an all-time high in 2009. In 2007 Hano was asked to oversee the debut of the new Science Illustrated, Bonnier Corp.'s first major U.S. launch. Hano again added to his portfolio in 2009 with the addition of Popular Photography, Sound + Vision and American Photography when the magazines were acquired by Bonnier. In 2010 Hano launched the next generation of magazines with Popular Science+ for the iPad, which has helped the title surge ahead 11 percent in ad pages for the year-to-date through July. The company will continue its iPad success with the launch of Popular Photography+ and Sound + Vision+ later this month. "This adds to the great year my staff and I have had at the Technology Group titles," says Hano. Prior to assuming the Group Publisher role in 2003, Hano was no stranger to Popular Science. He served as Director of Sales and Marketing for the magazine from 2001 to 2003 and was a sales representative for Popular Science from 1987 to 1992. In the interim, he was Associate Publisher of Popular Mechanics and Group Publisher at Saveur and Garden Design. Zinczenko joined Bonnierâ€™s Outdoor Group in January 2006, and he and his staff have overseen tremendous growth from the brands since. He has led continual ad-page and revenue growth for Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and Shot Business while also doubling the brandsâ€™ online growth. The groupâ€™s flagship title, Field & Stream, is currently posting a 9 percent increase in ad pages for the July issue and is up 4.2 percent in ad pages year-to-date. The group is also up 60 percent in online revenue year-to-date through June. Zinczenko was inducted into the Media Industry Newsletterâ€™s Sales Executive Hall of Fame in 2008. Under Zinczenkoâ€™s guidance, Bonnier's Outdoor Group has also seen a dramatic shift in its events business and strategic partnerships. Since joining the group, Zinczenko has turned events into a profit center and more than doubled the groupâ€™s revenue from integrated programs. He is also credited with signing a number of highly profitable strategic partnerships for his group, including a multi-year deal with the Outdoor Channel and a recent videogaming deal with 505 Games. Zinczenko began his career in publishing in 1992 at Rodale, where he was a sales representative for Scuba Diving. At age 24, he was promoted to Ad Director of Bicycling magazine and then Associate Publisher a year later. In 1999, after a successful sales position with the New Yorker, Zinczenko joined Outside magazine, where he directed the Eastern sales effort and exceeded his 1999 objective by 227 percent. After four years of often triple-digit revenue growth, Zinczenko rejoined Rodale as VP/Publisher of Backpacker to help rebuild the 31-year-old title.
