WaPo Help Wanted: Richmond Correspondent, Homeland Security Reporter

With Tim Craig's move to the District political staff, we are looking for an experienced reporter to cover Virginia politics and government just as the state's nationally important gubernatorial race moves into high gear. Reporters in our Richmond bureau are self-starters adept at breaking news, political analysis and government coverage. During campaigns and legislative sessions, the job requires long hours and weekend work. The successful candidate must get up to speed quickly on the issues facing Northern Virginia, break news of statewide import and write enterprise stories that resonate with Washington-area readers. Like all beats at the paper, this one has a critical Web component. The Virginia Politics blog has become a bookmarked site throughout the state and beyond, and has been called Virginia's political bible by more than one operative. The successful candidate, who will join Anita Kumar in Richmond, will have a proven track record of A1 enterprise, Internet savvy and an ability to work collaboratively. While political reporting experience is not required, it is highly valued. Regional Homeland Security/Local Congressional Reporter. The departure of Mary Beth Sheridan to cover the State Department for National leaves an opening for a reporter to cover both homeland security in our region and the D.C. area's congressional delegation. We combine these two subjects in one assignment because the region's representatives in Congress are closely involved in local security issues. Mary Beth's work illustrated that strategy's effectiveness, most recently in her fine coverage of security issues during the inauguration, the battle over D.C. voting rights and local jurisdictions' earmarks in the stimulus package. We are looking for a strong reporter and writer who can break news and produce hard-edged enterprise, and is especially effective at cultivating sources. Experience covering security issues, or government and politics, is a plus but not required. We want someone who can track local officials'activities and hold them accountable on significant local issues ranging from evacuation plans in case of a terrorist attack to infighting over transportation funding. This reporter would report to the City Staff but have regionwide responsibilities. We plan to hire internally for both these jobs.
