Supreme Court to Hear Freelancer Copyright Case
Publishing giants Reed Elsevier, NYT, Thomson Reuters, News Corp’s Dow Jones & Co, and Knight Ridder were granted an appeal by the U.S. Supreme Court yesterday. The case involves a nearly $18 million copyright settlement that the publishers reached with freelance journos in 2005.
The epic battle that began in 2001 started when a group of writers sued the publishers and a number of online databases, stating that their contracts did not allow for the online distribution and electronic archival of their work.
