NBC's Richard Engel: 'Torture Doesn't Work'
On today’s edition of Morning Joe, NBC’s chief foreign correspondent, Richard Engel, discussed the effectiveness, or rather ineffectiveness, of torture in the wake of the Senate Intelligence Committee Report.
“I think history, in this case and in many other cases, has proven pretty conclusively that torture doesn’t work,” Engel said. “You don’t get reliable information. You have to compromise your own values to do it.”
Citing an Egyptian official, he claimed that the practice was a lazy and, more often than not, fruitless tactic for gathering intelligence.
“It may sound like an irrelevant example, but an Egyptian security official who is retired now — Egyptians, by the way, have a long history of doing horrible things to people in their detention — he told me at the end of his career, he was open about it, he said, ‘We tortured a lot of people,” Engel continued, citing the official.
