In Memoriam: Joseph C. Cooke

Joseph C. Cooke, 80, the longtime publisher and editor of the Washington Sun weekly newspaper, died Jan. 17 of blood cancer at his home in Washington.

Mr. Cooke, who was widely known by his initials, J.C., bought the Sun in 1968 and published it as an uplifting voice for the city’s African American community for the next 40 years. I
