CNN’s Executive Vice President, Mark Whitaker has a new book out called My Long Trip Home. He calls it a “tribute” to his parents, who were an inter-racial couple back when it was illegal for such acts in the 1950’s. He said he always knew that his parents were “interesting people” and he always wanted to tell their story and didn’t have the drive to do it until his father’s passing just a few years ago. He calls this a “reporter’s book” and even uses his mother as a source for the writings.

Whitaker recently sat down with WMLB 1690 in Atlanta to tell his story. Whitaker talks of his complicated relationship with his dad and some of the problems that he continues to work through. For example, his father was “very brilliant and charismatic to the point where I actually distrusted charm and people who were charming.” It’s that cynicism that led him to journalism. As it happens, having a healthy cynicism of charming people can take you far in that line of work.
