Brady: "Shutting this function down is a bad idea."

Washingtonpost.com Executive Editor Jim Brady’s thoughts (from the paper’s internal critique board) on whether to shut down comments (earlier):

Just wanted to weigh in on what we’re doing to try to deal with the issues with comments on the site. I’d agree that, in the past few weeks, we’ve seen a marked increase in the number of reprehensible comments on the site. Not sure why that is, but whatever the reason, we need to address it.
